Teachers and students of law department of University of Rajshahi observed the “International Human Rights Day” on campus on 10 December. This day is observed to mark the anniversary of the presentation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. After a resolution was passed on this matter since 1950, all the States and various organizations observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.
With the slogan “Our Rights. Our Freedoms. Always” this year’s Human Rights Day is also marking the 50th anniversary of the two International Covenants on Human Rights: ICCPR and ICESCR.
Echoing the support with human rights activists all over the world, over 300 hundred teachers and students of law department of the university brought out a procession from in front of the department at Rabindra Arts building at 11:00am.
Abu Naser Md Wahid, chairman of the department inaugurated the procession that ended at the same place after parading the main streets of the campus.
Among others, associate Professor Dr Md Abdur Rahim Mia, assistant professor Zobaida Sultana and Sadiqul Islam of the department addressed the procession.
Contacted, Prof Biswajit Chanda, dean of RU law faculty said, on this day we have to focus on the human rights of children, aboriginal and other minorities of the country.
He stressed on the proper execution of existing law to protect their rights. He also urged the government to enact suitable laws where such law is absent to protect the rights of the marginalized.
While endorsing United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s comment Assistant Professor Sadiqul Islam Sagar said, regardless of our position and status, we all must recommit in guaranteeing and protecting the fundamental human rights of all.
